What
is Media Conversion?
Media converters enable network managers to easily and cost-effectively
connect one type of media with other, dissimilar media (e.g. twisted pair
with fiber optic cabling). Media converters are physical-layer networking
devices that simply receive data signals from one media and transmit them
to the other media with minimal delays. Media converters are completely
transparent to other networking devices and can be placed anywhere in the
network.
Why Media Conversion?
Media conversion provides significant cost savings by enabling seamless
integration between legacy equipment, copper-based wiring infrastructures
and the latest optical networking gear. Media converters play an important
role in today’s dynamic networks and allow network managers to future-proof
their networks for tomorrow’s requirements in data throughput, cabling bandwidth,
distance and security. |

Managed media conversion
enables network managers to eliminate the guesswork, avoid expensive downtime,
and quickly isolate problems without visiting multiple wiring closets. The
modular iMediaCenter platform features an embedded SNMP management agent,
making media conversion management both easy and cost-effective for the
first time.
|
Media conversion provides a cost-effective
solution to extending the life of legacy wiring infrastructures. The MediaConverter
Series includes modules that install in 1-, 4-, 8- and 12-slot chassis and
are available for converting between thin coax, copper and fiber cabling,
as well as between multi-mode and single-mode fiber. |

| PC card converters
are ideal for Fiber-to-the-Desktop applications and for companies with rapidly
changing needs such as adding new employees and changing workstation locations.
McPC simply installs inside the PC— no need to replace existing NICs, no
IRQ utilization needed and no additional configuration required.
|
Standalone copper-to-fiber
media converters are small, rugged and can be installed in virtually any
location, making them ideal for environments where space is limited. McBasic
comes with an internal AC power supply, increasing reliability over other
converters that use external AC/DC power transformers. |
